I am passionate about the sling because it is a dying art. Just about everyone on this planet has ancestors that depended on the sling for the survival of their clan. This is such a simple tool yet it is so powerful. When a person first learns to use the sling it is an awkward process. At first the rocks fly off in every direction, but after a few tries, the rock becomes more and more accurate and the speed and force increase accordingly. After a short period of time the sling becomes a deadly and effective weapon. When you can knock soda cans off a log with consistency, then you have acquired a skill that will give you protection for the rest of your life and it is easily carried in your back pocket.
It has taken years of experimentation to perfect the materials, the knots used and the technique. If you don't tie the knots on the pouch just right, they get in the way of your accuracy. If inferior materials are used then they can break at any time, sending your projectile somewhere it shouldn't be.
